CALI: The Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction
CALI is a non-profit consortium of member law schools that researches and develops computer-mediated legal instruction. It also supports law faculty and students who are using technology and distance learning in legal education.
The CALI Library of Student Lessons
The CALI Lesson Library is a collection of over 720 interactive, computer-based lessons covering 34 legal subject areas. The lessons are written by law faculty and librarians and reviewed by the CALI Editorial Board. CALI lessons are designed to supplement and enhance traditional law school instruction. Each lesson description includes an estimated completion time that ranges from 15 minutes to more than an hour.
NEW lessons for the current academic year are listed here: http://www2.cali.org/lessons/flyers/NewLessons.pdf.
Faculty/Staff Access to the Lessons
Lessons Online: Faculty/staff must register online and create a personal logon before accessing the lessons. Contact Jane Thompson, Assistant Director for Faculty Services, at jane.thompson@colorado.edu to obtain Colorado Law’s CALI faculty authorization code. When you have the code, follow these instructions:
- Go to http://www2.cali.org/. In the My CALI box on the right side of the page, click on the link for “Not A Registered User Yet? Click Here.”
- Enter Colorado Law’s CALI authorization code.
- At the Registration screen, enter your e-mail address and a password of your choosing. On subsequent visits to the website, this will be your logon.
- To get to CALI lessons, click on Lessons on the menu bar at the top of the page, and select Lessons by Subject, Lessons by Casebook, or Lessons by Course Outline.
- You can use the LessonText service to view the full-text of a CALI lesson (all of the questions and answers). In this format, you can also print out the lessons to read offline. This service is available only for lessons created with CALI Author software.
- You can use the LessonLink service to create hyperlinks to CALI lessons from your course web pages. Both Westlaw/TWEN and LexisNexis web course systems allow faculty to create direct links to CALI lessons.
Lessons on DVD: All Colorado Law faculty receive copies of the annual CALI Lesson Library DVD, which are distributed by the Law Library at the beginning of fall semester. All current CALI lessons are on this disc, but CALI recommends using the regularly updated, online versions of the lessons.
Student Access to the Lessons

All first-year law students receive a card displaying this code. Also, students may contact Alan Pannell, Head of Reference, at alan.pannell@colorado.edu to obtain the code.
